Cyberbullying at Bitterfeld Gymnasium

On November 23rd, 2018 four actors – Shane, Matt, Amy and Amber – from the "White Horse Theatre" performed "Move to Junk" in front of about 200 pupils of the 7th and 8th form in our assembly hall.

The story was about cyberbullying. A girl called Amanda went to a new school. But she couldn't make friends there because she liked playing football and was very good at it, which seemed strange to both girls and boys.

In the course of the story a picture with a naked woman and the girl's head appeared on the internet and she got strange phone calls saying that nobody liked her and it would be better if she killed herself. She couldn't talk to anyone – not even to her parents. In the end the girl saw no other way than taking a big knife and …

Our school has been inviting the "White Horse Theatre" for over 20 years because the pupils not only want to improve their English listening and viewing skills they also want to experience native speakers on stage. This play and its open ending made us think about our own sometimes careless behaviour on the internet and the dangers of "harmless" cyberbullying.

A tragedy ending with the death of two lovers

On Friday, November 23rd 2018, there was a theatre play at Europagymnasium "Walther Rathenau" in Bitterfeld. About 200 students from 10th and 11th grade and also our English teachers gathered in the assembly hall to watch the actors of the "White Horse Theatre" company perform William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" on stage.

The performance showed the tragedy of the children of two enemy families. Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other at first sight. But their lover never has a chance.

We all know this famous story but we have never seen it on stage before – and now performed by native speakers in original Shakespearean English! That was an outstanding experience but quite a challenge too. However a challenge it was for the actors as well because the four of them had to play different parts and they did it very well.

We are looking forward to inviting them to our school next year again.
